Due to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the population has decreased by over 6 million people. Currently, Ukraine's population stands at 35.8 million, reported Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets on December 3.
In 2022, the population of Ukraine was 42 million. However, following the onset of Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine, demographic indicators began to decline significantly, and as of 2024, the population is 35.8 million citizens.
According to projections from the Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences, Ukraine's population may decrease to 25.2 million by 2051, a drop of over 10 million in 27 years.
In response to the demographic decline in Ukraine, the government has committed to funding the preservation of reproductive cells of Ukrainian servicemen and servicewomen who have sustained injuries affecting their reproductive functions. Previously, in the event of a serviceman's death, the cells were discarded, which sparked significant public criticism. However, the state budget for 2025 includes allocations for the cryoconservation of reproductive cells.
Nevertheless, the Ombudsman believes that Ukraine does not sufficiently inform citizens about medical guarantees. According to Lubinets, the authorities need to enhance public awareness and improve legislation regarding biological parenthood.
It is noteworthy that UN forecasts predict a reduction in Ukraine's population to 15.3 million by the year 2100. Additionally, the UN report states that as of July 2024, Ukraine's population is 37.8 million.
