The Ukrainian technology company Himera has accused servicemen of the State Border Guard Service of beating its 23-year-old employee near the village of Vyshka in the Zakarpattia region. In response, the State Border Guard Service stated that they detained the man for attempting to illegally cross the border.
As reported on November 11 in an official letter, Himera stated that on September 27, 2024, their employee was heading to a glamping site with friends in the village of Vyshka, Zakarpattia region, and during an encounter with border guards, he was beaten for refusing to admit to illegal border crossing.
“According to the conclusion of the emergency room doctor, our employee sustained soft tissue bruises to the head and left elbow joint. He was placed in metal handcuffs, his mobile phone was confiscated, and he was denied access to a lawyer. The reason for the use of force by the border guard officials was that our employee disagreed with the unfounded accusation of attempting to illegally cross the state border and refused to write an explanation dictated by the border guard officer,” the post on the company's Facebook page stated.
The Western Regional Department of the State Border Guard Service confirmed that the company employee, along with two other men, was detained for attempting to illegally cross the border, but asserted that no one was beaten.
“No physical force or pressure was applied to the detained citizen, nor to the other two individuals who were detained with him, by the servicemen of the border detachment. The men were detained administratively for accountability for illegal crossing or attempting to illegally cross the state border of Ukraine,” the State Border Guard Service stated, noting that the complaint regarding the unlawful actions of the border guards was received by the Contact Center a month after the incident.
An internal investigation has been launched in the Chop border detachment. The case regarding the attempt of illegal border crossing by the company employee and his companions is under judicial review.
Additionally, it should be noted that Himera is a Ukrainian electronics manufacturer. The company supplies the military with tactical radios featuring a secure digital system.
