A court conditionally sentenced a driver from Lviv region for hitting a pedestrian and leaving them on the road.

According to the case materials, the accident occurred on February 23, 2024, around 11:00 PM near the village of Shabelnia in the Rava-Ruska community. Yurii Zyver, who was driving a Mercedes Benz V220 D while intoxicated, struck a 23-year-old pedestrian traveling in the same direction. As a result, the pedestrian sustained severe injuries, and the perpetrator fled the scene without offering any assistance to the victim.

The Zhovkva District Court in the Lviv region has sentenced 34-year-old Yury Zyver, who was intoxicated while driving a Mercedes Benz V220 D, for hitting a pedestrian near Rava-Ruska and fleeing the scene, leaving the victim behind. The perpetrator received a suspended sentence.

Yury Zyver, who was driving the Mercedes Benz V220 D while intoxicated, struck a 23-year-old pedestrian who was walking in the same direction. As a result, the pedestrian sustained serious injuries, and the perpetrator fled the scene without providing assistance to the victim.

During the court hearing, the defendant admitted his guilt. He stated that he initially did not realize he had hit a person, but later understood what had happened and was in a state of shock. He also confirmed that he had consumed alcohol while helping a friend unload a fence. The defendant expressed genuine remorse for his actions and compensated the victim's relatives for the damages incurred.

Judge Maryana Oleshchuk found Yury Zyver guilty of leaving a victim in danger (part 1 of Article 135 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) and sentenced him to two years of imprisonment. However, the court's verdict exempted the perpetrator from the main punishment, establishing a two-year probation period. An appeal against the sentence may still be filed.

As reported by the Lviv police, the 23-year-old pedestrian died as a result of the accident. The police have located the perpetrator of the incident.
