The State Bureau of Investigations has announced suspicions of treason against a former member of parliament from the now-banned "Party of Regions."
According to a source from
LIGA.net in the agency, the individual in question is Vadim Kolesnichenko.
The former MP is also suspected of inciting national enmity in conjunction with deception, as well as glorifying Russia.
Law enforcement officials note that prior to the events of the Revolution of Dignity, the individual actively participated in attempts by the then-government to thwart Ukraine's Euro-integration, instead aiding in its rapprochement with Russia.
Among other activities, the State Bureau of Investigation (GBR) reports that the suspect organized provocative actions aimed at sowing discord between Ukraine and Poland. It appears that this refers to a 2013 appeal by 148 MPs to the Polish Sejm, requesting recognition of the events of 1942-1943 as genocide against the Polish people.
In 2014, the individual prematurely resigned from his position as a people's deputy and fled to the temporarily occupied Crimea, specifically to the city of Sevastopol, where he initially took a position as an advisor in the illegal administration of the Russian Federation, and later unsuccessfully ran for the position of pseudo-governor of Sevastopol.
Although the former MP did not achieve the desired positions or recognition, he continued to engage in subversive activities against Ukraine—making relevant statements in local media, filming videos, and posting them publicly on the Internet, law enforcement officials report.
"In his speeches following the onset of the full-scale invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine, the traitor publicly praised the aggressive war and the aggressor, belittled the Ukrainian people, and denied Ukrainian statehood," the agency noted.
Earlier, in early November 2024, the Shevchenkivskyi District Court sentenced this same former MP to five years of imprisonment for inciting members of the then-police to exceed their authority with the use of violence and for inciting national enmity and hatred. According to the GBR's report, the suspect is currently residing in temporarily occupied Sevastopol.
Kolesnichenko has been a member of the "Party of Regions" since 2001 and served in the Verkhovna Rada during the fifth, sixth, and seventh convocations. He is most "notorious" for co-developing the controversial "language law" of 2012 alongside Serhiy Kivalov. The former regionalist also co-authored dictatorial laws passed during the Revolution of Dignity in January 2014.
