Details: The political agreement between the Danish government and parliament allocates over 2 billion dollars to strengthen military presence, primarily in the Arctic.
As part of the agreement, funding will be provided for the deployment of three naval vessels, two additional long-range drones, and the use of satellites for gathering intelligence in the region.
The Danish government notes that the new security investments were developed in collaboration with the authorities of the Faroe Islands and Greenland, which will be affected by the deployment of new military assets.
They also announced the conclusion of another agreement "with an emphasis on enhancing deterrence and defense in the region."
"According to the Danish Intelligence Service, the threat level in the Arctic and North Atlantic has worsened. Therefore, we must significantly enhance our defense presence in these areas," commented Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen.
Background:
- Trump recently returned to the idea of acquiring a strategically important and resource-rich Arctic island. He first proposed this idea during his initial term, calling U.S. control over the island, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, an "absolute necessity" for global security.
- Recently, media reported on a tense phone conversation between Trump and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, during which she insisted that Greenland is not for sale.
