Vučić's direct speech: "On Monday (December 23 – ed.), Robert Fico will go to Putin as the leader of a European Union country, which, I don’t need to tell you, will provoke a reaction among other EU leaders."

Details: The Slovak side had not commented on Vučić's statements at the time of the news publication.

If Fico indeed travels to Russia, it will mark his first visit to the aggressor state since returning to power in 2023. He will also be the third European leader to visit Moscow after Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Viktor Orbán since the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine.

As is known, Slovakia has repeatedly attempted to extend the agreement between Ukraine and Russia regarding the transit of Russian gas, which expires in 2024.

What preceded this: Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal confirmed in a conversation with the Slovak Prime Minister this week that Kyiv rules out extending the transit agreement with Gazprom, but noted that Ukraine is open to transporting gas through its gas transportation system, if it is not from Russia.

Recently, Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine does not consider renewing the agreement with Gazprom for the transit of Russian gas to Europe and indicated that Kyiv would not agree to transport Russian gas disguised as Azerbaijani gas.
