Details: On Monday, January 27, Trump signed an executive order to establish the "Iron Dome" air defense system for the United States, aimed at promoting a policy of "peace through strength."
In the order, the American president noted that over the past 40 years, "the threat from next-generation strategic weapons has become more intense and complex, as equal and nearly equal adversaries develop next-generation delivery systems and their own integrated air and missile defense capabilities on their territory."
The document emphasizes that the U.S. policy aimed at achieving the goal of "peace through strength" entails ensuring the collective defense of citizens and the country by deploying and maintaining a next-generation missile defense shield.
Trump set the objective of deterring potential aggressors and protecting citizens and critical infrastructure from any foreign aerial attack on the nation.
The executive order also highlights the need to guarantee a reliable counterstrike capability.
Trump instructed the Secretary of Defense to present a reference architecture, requirements based on existing capabilities, and a plan for creating the next-generation missile defense shield within 60 days from the issuance of the order.
The plan should include, among other things, protection for the U.S. against ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles, as well as other next-generation aerial attack means.
Additionally, the document sets forth the task of developing new interception systems and proposes to create and deploy capabilities to counter missile attacks before launch and during the active flight phase.
The White House statement emphasizes the necessity of implementing a secure supply chain for all components of the new system.
During the election campaign, Trump promised to task the military with creating an "impenetrable dome to protect our people," modeled after the Israeli missile defense system.
Despite Israel's modern air defense systems and the relatively small territory it needs to protect, the country occasionally reports missile and drone landings.
In December 2024, it was reported that the American THAAD missile defense system successfully intercepted a ballistic missile launched toward Israel from Yemen for the first time.
