Details: A state of emergency regarding the situation in Ukraine was declared on March 6, 2014, by the then-President of the United States, Barack Obama, under decree 13660. Since then, its scope has been expanded several times - notably on February 21, 2022, following Russia's recognition of the legal status of the terrorist entities "L/DNR".
Additionally, in December 2014 and September 2018, U.S. presidents implemented further sanction measures.
"The actions and policies outlined in these decrees continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States," states Trump's decree.
In this context, the U.S. President ordered the state of emergency declared in decree 13660 to be "extended for 1 year," or until March 6, 2026.
It is worth noting that in 2024, this same state of emergency was extended by the previous U.S. President, Joe Biden.
Background:
- Previously, Donald Trump stated that removing sanctions on Russia is not currently being considered, but he allowed for the possibility in the future.
- Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently indicated that easing sanctions against Russia could be a topic of negotiation regarding the war in Ukraine.
- He also mentioned that the United States is prepared to either strengthen or weaken sanctions depending on Russia's willingness to negotiate.
